Umberto Gervasi was born in Catania, Sicily. His parents were confectioners that produced local sweets sold at popular fairs.
At the age of 14 he began working as a bricklayer, and at the age of 28 he moved to Sesto San Giovanni (Milan), where he worked as a metalworker in a great steel factory. In the ‘60s, Northern Italy was a difficult place to live for the Southern people like Gervasi.
His artistic vocation was born in the factory and becomes the protagonist of his life at the end of the ‘80s, coinciding with the decline in the metal industry and the closure of many factories. Gervasi began to produce sculptures with clay at the age of 50. The factory life and the injustice denounces were a great source of inspiration for his works.
He produces also several paintings with bright colours and expressionists lines, that reminding his native Sicily.
Now he lives and works in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan.

Umberto Gervasi è nato a Catania, da una famiglia di venditori ambulanti di dolci locali.
All’età di 14 anni inizia a lavorare come muratore; a 28 anni si sposta a Sesto San Giovanni, Milano, dove lavora come metalmeccanico presso la Breda, grande azienda siderurgica. Negli anni ’60 il Nord Italia è un luogo difficile per i meridionali come Gervasi, saliti per trovare lavoro.
La sua vocazione artistica nasce nel periodo milanese e diventa protagonista della sua vita dalla fine degli anni ’80, momento di declino dell’industria siderurgica e di chiusura di molte fabbriche del settore. Gervasi incomincia a produrre sculture di terracotta dall’età di 50 anni. Il duro lavoro di fabbrica e le sue numerose denunce a quel mondo ingiusto sono d’ispirazione ai suoi lavori.
Gervasi è anche pittore: crea dipinti fatti di colori accesi e linee di forte matrice espressionista che rimandano alla sua terra nativa in Sicilia.
Ora vive e lavora a Sesto San Giovanni, Milano.
