JARDIN ROSA MIR

If often the desire to visit an outsider place “forces” us to move in remote territories, far from the main roads, making us feel like old explorers of worlds not yet told by anyone, sometimes we find some exceptions that remind us that the extraordinary can be easily found even in the ordinary.
Walking in the main street of the wonderful Croix-Rousse district of Lyon (France), we come across a timeless garden made of shells, flowers and fantastic shapes. It is the “Jardin Rosa Mir”, designed by Jules Senis (1913-1983), a Spanish bricklayer who, because of the civil war, emigrated to France, settling permanently with his family in Lyon in 1952.

Se spesso il desiderio di visitare un luogo outsider ci “costringe” a muoverci in territori remoti e lontani dalle strade principali, facendoci sentire come dei vecchi esploratori di mondi ancora non raccontati da nessuno, a volte troviamo qualche eccezione che ci ricorda come lo straordinario si possa tranquillamente trovare anche nell’ordinario.
Passeggiando nella via principale del meraviglioso quartiere della Croix-Rousse di Lione (Francia), ci si imbatte in un giardino senza tempo, fatto di conchiglie, fiori e forme fantastiche. È il “Jardin Rosa Mir”, ideato da Jules Senis (1913-1983), muratore spagnolo che, a causa della guerra civile, emigrò in Francia, stabilendosi definitivamente con la famiglia a Lione nel 1952.

Born in Burjassot, Spain, Senis soon became a master bricklayer, respecting a family tradition active for 4 generations. Having escaped Franco’s regime, he took refuge in France in 1947 and in 1951 arrived in Lyon with his wife and two children, settling permanently in the Croix-Rousse district. Here he opened a masonry and tiling business.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1952 and when he was hospitalized he made a promise that if he recovered he would build a beautiful garden in honor of his mother, Rosa Mir Mercader. He actually recovered in 1957, and his determination also made him start building the garden, which was in the middle of a block of rented houses.
He started with the construction of porches and columns, abundantly decorated with shells and pebbles of various shapes and sizes.
Between 1957 and 1977 he completed the work on an area of 400 m²: the architectural structure recalls the Spain places that had he lived, from the Alhambra of Granada and the works of Gaudi to the Monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia. There is also a small sanctuary with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
Between lavender and roses, the flowers also contribute to create a warm and Mediterranean atmosphere typical of its places of origin.

Nato in Spagna a Burjassot, Senis divenne presto maestro artigiano muratore, rispettando una tradizione familiare attiva da 4 generazioni. Scampato al regime di Franco, si rifugiò in Francia nel 1947 e nel 1951 arrivò a Lione con moglie e due figli, stabilendosi definitivamente nel quartiere della Croix-Rousse. Qui aprì un’attività di muratura e piastrellatura.
Gli fu diagnosticato un cancro alla gola nel 1952: ricoverato in ospedale fece la promessa che, se si fosse ripreso, avrebbe costruito un bellissimo giardino in onore di sua madre, Rosa Mir Mercader. Riuscì davvero a guarire nel 1957, e la sua convinta determinazione gli fece incominciare anche la realizzazione del giardino, che si trovava in mezzo ad un blocco di case in affitto.
Partì con la costruzione di portici e colonne, abbondantemente decorati con conchiglie e ciottoli di varie forme e dimensioni.
Tra il 1957 e il 1977 completò il lavoro su una superficie di 400 m²: la struttura architettonica richiama alla Spagna che aveva vissuto Senis, dall’Alhambra di Granada alle opere di Gaudì fino al Monastero di Montserrat in Catalogna. Non manca inoltre un piccolo santuario con una statua della Vergine Maria.
Tra lavanda e rose, anche i fiori contribuiscono a creare un’atmosfera calda e mediterranea tipica dei suoi luoghi d’origine.

A few months before his death, in 1983, he was informed that in the future the city of Lyon would take care of his garden to ensure its continuity: in that same year an association of friends was created and today they promote the place through events and communication on the web.
Since 1987 the garden has belonged to the city of Lyon and has become a historical monument. The site was closed for security reasons from 2011 to 2016: with the help of landscape architect Fréderic Reynaud, it was renovated during that period and about 5000 plants imported from the Mediterranean area were added.

Alcuni mesi prima della sua morte, nel 1983, fu informato che in futuro la città di Lione si sarebbe occupata del suo giardino per garantirne la continuità: in quello stesso anno venne infatti creata un’associazione di amici che oggi promuovono il luogo attraverso eventi e comunicazione sul web.
Dal 1987 il giardino appartiene alla città di Lione ed è divenuto un monumento storico.
Il luogo è stato chiuso per motivi di sicurezza dal 2011 al 2016: con l’aiuto dell’architetto paesaggista Fréderic Reynaud, in quel periodo è stato ristrutturato e sono state aggiunte circa 5000 piante importate dall’area mediterranea.
