HASSAN (Ousseynou Gassama)
(1970 | SENEGAL)

Of Senegalese origins, Hassan is located in a Barcelona. He lives lonely on the street in a neighborhood that hosts many wine warehouses: the wine boxes are the tables on which he makes his drawings.
In 2010, when a man met him and began to take an interest in his productions, he seemed to be around 30 years old. According to his fellow natives from Senegal, Hassan comes from a village and has a daughter, but nothing else is known about him, except that, whenever he can make some money, he buys some batteries for his transistor radio to listen to some music.

Hassan cuts the wine boxes with a saw and a cutter, in often long and narrow rectangle shapes. After accurately positioning his tools, he designs houses with flat roofs and geometrically-styled functional furniture, following a sort of axonometry. His designs are clear and precise, enriched with meticulous details.
His signature is a copper coin that he inlays in the wood, then engraved and punched.
He cafefully stores all your utensils, pencils, rulers and wooden boards in a bag that he always keeps with him.
A collector bought 80 drawings and told him that he would stage an exhibition in France. Hassan replied indifferently, “Everyone has his own way, leave me alone.”

His works are present in some important Art Brut collections, such as the ABCD Bruno Decharme Collection (France), the Eternod / Mermod Collection (Switzerland), the Treger-Saint Silvestre Collection (Portugal) and the Dammann Collection (Switzerland)
