FUMIHIRO ENDO

The artist’s diaries and notebooks have something extremely fascinating in them: regardless of their final function, they remain an extremely personal and – at times – secret fact. They are perhaps the “place” where a person truly manages to unleash a “giant” creative and impulsive force precisely because this energy belongs to the birth of an idea. Today, on Outsider Art Now, I speak of Fumihiro Endo, a Japanese artist who has been making notebooks for over 30 years, assembling fragments of life – from photo cuttings to receipts – thus documenting his days. The result are huge books containing his story in a particularly personal style, at times intimate and aesthetically fascinating.

I diari e i quaderni d’artista hanno in sé qualcosa di estremamente affascinante: indipendentemente dalla loro funzione finale, rimangono un fatto estremamente personale e – a tratti – segreto. Sono forse il “luogo” in cui una persona riesce davvero a sprigionare una forza creatrice e impulsiva “gigante” proprio perché questa energia appartiene alla nascita di un’idea.
Oggi, su Outsider Art Now, parlo di Fumihiro Endo, artista giapponese che realizza dei quaderni da oltre 30 anni assemblando frammenti di vita – da ritagli di foto a scontrini – documentando dunque le sue giornate. Il risultato sono degli enormi libri contenenti la sua storia in uno stile particolarmente personale, a tratti intimo ed esteticamente affascinante.

Fumihiro Endo was born on April 20, 1972 in Japan. He now lives alone in Fukuoka after a bad marriage, and works in a supermarket.

Since he was 20 he developed a passion for handmade books, so much so that he built miniature magazines entitled “Maboroshi-magajin nansensu” (Illusionary magazine Nonsense), never shown to anyone and illustrated with manga, extracts from novels, news clippings, but also four-frames cartoons. 99 issues have been produced in 2 years.
A few years later, he continued to produce other manuscripts, such as a novel based on his colleagues from a wholesale pharmaceutical company where he worked.

Later, he began to produce what he called “Kanren Moso” (associative disappointments), collected from his daily life: this activity consists of collecting various printed materials, such as restaurant receipts, celebrity photo clippings, film booklets and everything that feeds his days and passions, and then puts them in a notebook. There, he creates original stories by assembling the confused scraps.
Fumihiro Endo loves Nobumasa Kushino (curator of the Kushino-Terrace gallery) and follows him as soon as possible by witnessing his dear relationship through photos and flyers in his books.
To this day, he still keeps a lot of creations in his notebooks.

Fumihiro Endo nasce il 20 aprile 1972 in Giappone. Ora vive da solo a Fukuoka, dopo un matrimonio finito male, e lavora in un supermercato.

Da quando aveva 20 anni ha sviluppato una passione per i libri fatti a mano, tanto da costruire delle riviste in miniatura intitolate “Maboroshi-magajin nansensu” (rivista di fantasmi disturbati), mai mostrate a nessuno e illustrate con manga, estratti di romanzi, ritagli di notizie, ma anche scene divise in quattro fotogrammi. Ne sono stati prodotti 99 numeri in 2 anni.
Alcuni anni dopo, ha continuato a produrre altri manoscritti, come un romanzo basato sui suoi colleghi di una società farmaceutica di vendita all’ingrosso in cui ha lavorato.

In seguito, iniziò a produrre quelle che chiamava “Kanren Moso” (delusioni associative), raccolte dalla sua vita quotidiana: questa attività consiste nel raccogliere diversi materiali stampati, come gli scontrini dei ristoranti, i ritagli fotografici di celebrità, i libretti dei film e tutto ciò che va ad alimentare i suoi giorni e le sue passioni, per poi inserirli in un quaderno. Lì, vi crea storie originali assemblando gli scarti confusi.
Fumihiro Endo adora Nobumasa Kushino (curatore della galleria Kushino-Terrace) e lo segue appena possibile testimoniando tramite foto e volantini nei suoi libri questa relazione a lui cara.
Ad oggi, continua a conservare ancora molte creazioni nei suoi quaderni.
