AUGUSTIN LESAGE

Augustin Lesage was born into a mining family near Lille, France. In 1911, while working at the coal-face, he heard in the depths of the mine a voice telling him of his spiritualist powers.
The voices became a central factor in his art; Lesage followed their orders and bought materials in response to their instructions. With no previous knowledge or experience of painting and no technical skill, his hand was guided by the voices. On purchasing his first canvas, he mistakenly bought one ten times the intended size, but his spirit guides instructed him not to be daunted and to begin painting.
He believed that his works were dictated by the spirit of  Leonardo da Vinci, and Marius of Tyana, deformation of Apollonius of Tyana or double of Marie, his little sister who died at the age of three.
Huge canvases became his chosen format. His first painting, made with small brushes, starting in the top right-hand corner, was covered with architectural motifs, stylised vegetation and organic forms.

Augustin Lesage è nato in una famiglia di minatori vicino a Lille, in Francia. Nel 1911, mentre lavorava, udì nel profondo della miniera una voce che gli parlava dei suoi poteri spiritici.
Le voci divennero un fattore centrale nella sua arte; Lesage ha seguito i loro ordini e ha acquistato materiali per produrre le sue opere in risposta alle loro istruzioni. Senza alcuna precedente conoscenza o esperienza di pittura e nessuna abilità tecnica, la sua mano era guidata dalle voci. Acquistando la sua prima tela, ne comprò erroneamente una dieci volte più grande della dimensione prevista, ma i suoi spiriti guida gli dissero di non spaventarsi e di iniziare a dipingere.
Credeva che le sue opere fossero dettate dallo spirito di Leonardo da Vinci e di Marius di Tiana, deformazione di Apollonio di Tiana o legato a Marie, sua sorella minore morta all’età di tre anni.
Le tele enormi sono diventate il suo formato predefinito. Il suo primo dipinto, realizzato con piccoli pennelli, iniziando dall’angolo in alto a destra, era ricoperto da motivi architettonici, vegetazione stilizzata e forme organiche.

From 1923, Augustin Lesage dedicated himself exclusively to painting. His meeting with the Egyptologist Alexandre Moret engendered in him a passion for ancient Egypt, and he declared himself to be the reincarnation of an artist at the time of the pharaohs.
He went on to develop his unique highly symmetrical style, drafting detailed patterns and monolithic constructions reminiscent of Egyptian and Oriental architectural forms. Lesage initially left his painting unsigned, then began adding the name “Leonardo da Vinci”. It was only later than he added his own signature. He painted right up until his death in 1954, leaving around 250 paintings.

Dal 1923 Augustin Lesage si dedica esclusivamente alla pittura. Il suo incontro con l’egittologo Alexandre Moret lo attirò vero la scoperta dell’antico Egitto, passione talmente forte al punto di dichiararsi la reincarnazione di un artista ai tempi dei faraoni.
Ha continuato a sviluppare il suo stile unico ed altamente simmetrico, disegnando modelli dettagliati e costruzioni monolitiche che ricordano le forme architettoniche egiziane e orientali. Lesage inizialmente lasciò il suo dipinto non firmato, poi iniziò ad aggiungere il nome “Leonardo da Vinci”. Solo più tardi ha aggiunto la sua firma. Dipinse fino alla sua morte nel 1954, lasciando circa 250 dipinti.
